Licensing & pricing

CMSi is owned by a consortium of conservation organisations operating on a not-for-profit basis. The aim of the consortium is simply to improve the quality of conservation and countryside management. CMSi needs to be economically sustainable and the consortium determined that the best way to achieve that is by adopting a semi-commercial business model. For this reason the consortium has contracted development, sales & support to exeGesIS, a specialist UK-based software and environmental consultancy.

Pricing and licensing principles

  • The consortium does not aim to recover initial investment but rather wishes to secure sufficient income to cover continuing development, management and support.
  • The consortium wishes to be fair with its pricing and therefore offers a pricing structure that reflects ‘ability to pay’.
  • The consortium will trust the user community and if there is any doubt over an organisation's financial standing, then the consortium will trust user organisations to correctly classify themselves.
  • Licensing will allow the software to be installed on more computers than licences purchased – providing no more than the licensed number are used at any one time. The consortium will trust users to respect this rule.
  • Where there is no ability to pay and where in the view of the consortium CMSi would be well used, then the CMSi software may be provided free of charge.
  • CMSi should represent exceptional value compared to other land management / asset applications.
  • CMSi licences may be purchased ‘in perpetuity’, or leased for a fixed period.
  • Pricing and licensing arrangements must be totally transparent.
  • Organisations will be able to install and run CMSi on their own IT infrastructure or have it hosted.

Ability to pay

Pricing is dependent upon an organisation's ability to pay and to enable this organisations are classified into one of three broad types:

Tier 1: Qualifying charitable / non-profit sector
This category is intended to include the smaller organisations, typically local or regional charitable or non-profit organisations

Tier 2: Public sector & non-qualifying charity / non-profit
This category includes all public sector / governmental organisations plus national charitable or non-profit organisations that do not qualify in Tier 1

Tier 3: Private sector / commercial
This category is all users who do not qualify for Tiers 1 or 2

If your organisation or project has no ability to pay for software, but you are confident that you could make good use of CMSi then please contact us. Please note whilst software may (at the discretion of the Consortium) be provided for free, a paid-for maintenance and support contract and training will still be needed.

You can convert from licence lease to licence purchase at any time up to (but not after) 3 years from start of the lease by paying the outstanding sum for the remainder of the 3 years, plus 15% of the purchase sum.

Software as a service

If you have an internet connection then we can host your CMSi on our servers. It makes little difference to the user experience but offers many advantages:

  1. The day-to-day CMSi user experience is very similar to if it were installed locally
  2. You (or your IT colleagues) save hassle, time and hardware resources
  3. Your CMSi can be accessed from more or less anywhere
  4. All installation work, software maintenance and upgrades are implemented by exeGesIS at no extra cost
  5. Technical support becomes more cost effective as exeGesIS can access your application and data directly
  6. Your data is securely managed and comprehensively backed up – and can be moved back to a local set-up at any time
  7. You have instant and free access to background and other national mapping datasets
  8. It offers an easy way to use the new web interface for volunteers – although there will be a small additional cost for this.

Maintenance and technical support (MATS)

MATS contracts are optional but recommended. They provide for unlimited remote technical support and free software upgrades.

Having a MATS contract enables ‘concurrency’ on CMSi and the Property & Agreements Module. This allows you install CMSi on (or have CMSi accessible from) 50% more PCs or laptops than you have purchased licenses for – so long as you don’t use more than your licensed number at any one time.
